Chlorine and chloramine are added to tap water to make it safe for humans to drink.

Unfortunately, this chlorine and chloramine can be lethal for fish. Lower levels of chlorine and chloramine

in water could cause gills irritation and high levels of stress. In higher levels presence of chlorine

and chloramine could cause death.

How can I treat chlorine and chloramine?

The basic rule is to understand that the chlorine is easier to handle with.

One method to get rid of chlorine is by letting water to stand for at least 24 hours until the

chlorine is evaporating.

The second method is by using commercial chemical like anti Chlorine and chloramine,

this chemicals based on sodium thiosulphate which neutralize the chlorine.

Some of these water conditioners (commercial chemicals) are also neutralizes ammonia,

bind toxic heavy metals and some of them add to the conditioners protective slime layer to the fish.

Other method to remove chloramine is by letting water to stand for at least two weeks

Until the chloramine evaporate.

The fourth method to remove chlorine and chloramine is by using activated carbon, In order to

succeed in this method it should be done in separate container and the water should

stand at least 24 hours.

The fifth method and maybe the most common one is to use water conditioners.

You have to check that your conditioner removes chloramine and not only the chlorine.

Chloramine is a compound of chlorine and ammonia. When we neutralize the chlorine we release ammonia,

ammonia known as NH3 discharged into water by fish.

The best solution is to purchase product which deals chlorine and chloramine and converts

the NH3 (ammonia) into NH4 (non toxic ammonia).

The last method is an expensive one but the most effective with no doubt, using r.o system can solve the

chlorine and chloramine problem.
