The Refractometer is a must have for all reef hobbyists.the refractometer is incredibly accurate even at very low salt levels, and are equally easy to use. Refractometers are also a quick and accurate way to measure the salinity of reef aquarium, Salinity is one of the most important parameters measured in reef aquaria. Seawater's salinity is generally defined in parts per thousand by weight (ppt) or in practical salinity units (PSU), which often is shown simply as S=35, or whatever the value actually is. Specific gravity changes with temperature and requires you to compensate for it to obtain an accurate reading. Place one or two drops of your tank's water onto the prism glass and close the plate cover over the glass. The light that passes through the glass will slowly bend and show through onto an internal scale. The scale is then magnified through an eyepiece that lets you read the water's measurements. On the scale, there is a blue top portion and a white bottom portion. Where your colors intersect is your reading. One side will measure the salinity in your water while the other measures gravity. Plastic hydrometers can be accurate, but seem to be more prone to inaccuracies than electronic meters and glass hydrometers. Done by: Josefh
