Setting up a planted tank can be a hard task especially if it is the first

time. There is a lot of free information out there but this information

can be confusing. I hope that you will find this article along with these

beautiful pictures helpful and useful. Hi-tech tanks refer to planted tanks

which are actively infused with Carbon dioxide (CO2) and hence require

all the complicated equipment that comes along with using CO2 in your

tanks. In Hi-tech tanks we use CO2, high light levels, a nutritious

substrate and a dense planting from day one. In this article we will see

how Shay Fertig setup his amazing plant tank. 

Plant tank- The new beginning

 

Equipment list: 

Aquarium: Rena 1.5 meter (450 litters) Lightning6 X T5 (54W) 2XSylvania Grolux + 2XOsram 8

40 + 2XOsram 865 

Filtration: 2 X Eheim pro 3 2028 CO2 system with ph controller 

Reactor: Two external backflow reactors connected to a separate pump each under substrate

heating cable - Rena 15m 100W  

Ultraviolet Sterilization: 36W UV R.O system 

Chiller: Teco TR-15 

Substrate: First layer 1 cm of pumice, second layer 2-3cm of pumice+ peat+ humus soil, third layer 2-3cm

Quartz mixed with JBL Florapol (contains clay), fourth layer pure crushed Quartz.

Filter and CO2 system with ph controller

Water Parameters: pH-5.9, KH-1d, GH-5d, CO2-40ppm, NO3-20ppm, PO4-2ppm, 275ms, Temp.-24 

Tank population: Discus, Neon Tetra, Cherry and red Caridina sp. "Crystal Red" Shrimps, Otocinclus,

Ancistrus, Florida flag, other tetras, Microrasbora sp. "Galaxy and much more….

Tank maintenance: Besides aquascaping, the tank is fully automated, including:

Automatic water change (100% RO), 100% a week. Automatic water change (100% RO), 100% a week. 

Automatic DIY fertilization with peristaltic pumps - KNO3, KH2PO4, KCL, MgSO4, CaCl2, Iron gluconate,

Iron EDTA, CSM+B, Flourish Excel. Automatic DIY fertilization with peristaltic pumps - KNO3, KH2PO4,

KCL, MgSO4, CaCl2, Iron gluconate, Iron EDTA, CSM + B, Flourish Excel.

Trimming- The aquarium is trimmed at least twice a week. Parts of the plants are trimmed from their upper

part and part from their lower.
