General information - Archer fish are like water pistol having the ability to spit out a strong and accurate jet of water. To get a good shooting the snout sticks out of the water, but the rest of the fish remains underwater. For accurate aim, they have large eyes located very near the mouth. The fish can squirt up to 7 times in quick succession, the best accurate is when they shoot from 1-2 meters. Common Name - Banded Archerfish, Archer Fish. Scientific name -Toxotes jaculatrix, Toxotes jaculator, Sciaena jaculatrix.  Family - Toxotidae. Origin - India, Philippines, Indonesia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Size - Up to 12 inches (30 cm). First discovered - Unknown. Nutrition - In wild theirs diet is mostly based on insects and this should be simulated in a tank environment. The archer fish will eat insects from the surface of the water as well as shooting them down from Branches. Sinking food will be ignored but with time they learn to eat flakes from the surface of the water. Behavior - calm and peaceful. Maintenance and care -60 gallon minimum ( leaving space at the top), Tall tanks are also recommended. Salinity of 2% is required to keep these fish long term, juveniles will tolerate full fresh water. Open swimming spaces are needed in the tank, heavily planted areas are recommended too, plant like mangroves will be ideal for them. Water Parameters - PH-7.0-8.0, Temperature: 77 to 88 F (25-31°C). Breeding- Very hard, There is no known way to sex Archers but we known that in nature the female laid up to 100,000 floating eggs.
