General information – The skirt tetra is a good beginner fish and

known to be very popular among hobbyists and usually available at

most fish stores. There are some different color varieties and even

some long fin varieties. some of which are artificially colored. Most

notable of the color variations are theblue and pink varieties. Due to

their peaceful nature, they make an excellent community fish  

Common Name - Black Skirt Tetra, Black Tetra, Black

Widow Tetra 

Scientific Name - Gymnocorymbus ternetzi 

Family - Characidae 

Origin - South America 

Size – up to 6 cm (2 inches) 

First discovered - Boulenger 1895 

Nutrition – Omnivore.the skirt tetra will accept most fish food

including flakes, freeze-dried, frozen and live foods.  

Behavior – Peaceful. The black skirt tetra will nip the fins of any

slow moving or long finned fish such as a Betta splendens or tiger

barbsso keep it with the right tank mates.

Maintenance and care – the skirt tetra requires 20 gallons (114 liters) tank size.this fish is a schooling

fish and should be kept in groups of 6 or more.should be kept with other non aggressive fish.    

Water Parameters – temperature: 75F - 80F (24C - 27C), PH: 6-7.5, DH: 5- 20 

Breeding - Egg Scatterer, Breeding the Black Skirt Tetra is very easy.the black skirt tetra should be kept

in a well planted breeding tank.Although the Black Skirt Tetra is an egg scatterer it prefer to lay eggs in

plants with fine leaves. The fry hatch after 24-28 hours and should be fed with fry food or with brine shrimp.

The adults may eat the eggs so you will need to remove the adults after they release the eggs.
