General information – The Oscar is found in the Amazon River basin, from the Orinoco River to the

Rio Paraguay, throughout Venezuela, Guyana, and Paraguay.the oscar inhabits in the tropical lowlands

of South America in the swamps of the Amazon River basin.

Its body is moderately compressed and oval shaped. The caudal fin is rounded, while the anal and dorsal

fins are often pointed.

Juvenile fish are gray to black in color with a pink marbled-ring pattern on the body.

Adult fish have an olive back with black and orange lower parts.

The Oscar Fish is used for food in some of the South American countries that it is native to.

The Oscar is very intelligent fish, it learn very quickly when it’s feeding time and react to

its keeper presents.

In the trade there are several color variations of Oscars available, Red Tiger Oscars, Tiger Oscars,

Red Oscars, Albino Tiger Oscars and Albino Red Oscars.    Astronotus ocellatus (tiger Oscar)

Nutrition - The Oscar will eat anything that will fit in its mouth.

They are mostly carnivorous and will eat fish, insects and worms. In captivity

they will accept commercial food such as flakes, pellets, frozen or live food.

The Oscar are not very picky eaters. 

Behavior -   peaceful.  

Maintenance and care – Oscars require a tank measuring at least 70 inches (about 180 cm) with a

capacity of 100 gallons and up (about 400 liters)     

Due to its eating habit (messy eater that produces a lot of waste) water changes

should perform often and powerful filtration system is essential. 

Don’t bother to decorate his tank he will  do it by himself.                  

Water Parameters – Temperature: 72 F – 79 F (22C- 26C), PH: 6-8, DH: 4-20 

Breeding – Breeding usually only takes place in a very large tank. Oscars are substrate spawners and

will lay from 200 to 2000 eggs at a time. After three or four days, the eggs hatch.

The fry is then transported to other location in order to protect them from potential predators.

Oscars tend and guard their young and known to be good parents.
