General information – The Uaru Cichlid is very good natured cichlid with elegant appearance. It came from the Amazon River Basin and from the Rio Negro basin. The Uaru is an intelligent cichlid that responds to their owner. It has orange eyes with an oval disk shape body. The body is a silver gray color with in dark brown to olive in the middle of their body. There is also a spot at the base of the tail. Nutrition – OmnivoreWill accept commercial food such as flakes, pellets and frozen food. Feeding should consist of vegetable matter such as lettuce spinach, cucumber and Spirulina pellets Behavior – Peaceful Maintenance and care – 80 gallons and up.Tank should have a gravel or sand bottom with a few woods in it. good established tank and well filtered water are essential for the Uaru. The Uaru should be kept with other peaceful fish. It will do best with peaceful tetras, Corydoras, Altum Angels, and peaceful Geophagus, the Uaru is a schooling species and should not be kept singly. Uaru has a tendency to eat aquarium plants so be careful Water Parameters – Temperature: 25C - 29C (77F - 84F), PH: 5.5 -7.5, DH: 5-14 Breeding – Hard to breedIn order to breed this amazing fish we will need lots of room. Decorate the breeding tank with large, rounded rocks, clay pots and flat slate to give them a choice of spawning sites. The female will lay 100-800 eggs at a time. Like discus the Uaru newly swimming fry eat the nutritious slime generated on the bodies of their parents so do not remove them from the parents. After two weeks the fry can be feed on hatched live baby brine shrimp or on fry food.
