General information – The Dimidiochromis Compressiceps is one of the biggest and

impressive fish in Lake Malawi.

This fish has been reported to attack the eyes of other fish and therefore some fish keepers

named him the Malawi eye biter.

The Dimidiochromis Compressiceps is an elongated fish with triangle-shaped head.

The mouth is large for catching prey. Body coloring ranges from silver to bright blue.  

Common Name - Malawi eye biter.

Scientific Name - Dimidiochromis compressiceps. 

Family – Cichlidae. 

Origin – Africa, Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe. 

Size – female: 25cm (9.8 inches) male: 20cm (7.9 inches). 

Nutrition – carnivore, in nature the Malawi Eye Biter feeds mostly on small fish,

in captivity will accept flake, pellet and frozen food, Meaty food is necessary.  

Behavior – aggressive, can be kept with other large aggressive species.

Small fish will be considered food. 

Maintenance and care – Requires minimum 90 gallon (350 litters) tank size.

Also requires stone formations that allow the fish good hiding places.

Due to their eating habit perform water changes on a weekly basses and

make sure to have well filtered water.  

Breeding – The Dimidiochromis Compressiceps is a mouth-brooder.

males will become extremely aggressive during and after spawning.

to maintain male aggression it should be kept in ratio of three females to each male in the tank.

The female will brood for up to 4 weeks in this time it is very easy to notice that the female brooding,

her enlarged mouth is easy to see.
