General information – The common goldfish is one of the most popular coldwater fish all over the world In the early 1600's these fish were exported first to Japan and then to Europe and were developed into the wonderful colors and forms of gold fish we see today. They originated in Asia, Central Asia and China. Today domesticated goldfish are distributed world-wide many people belief that it will live in any conditions but to be honest the goldfish suit to ponds and not to aquariums. Common Name – Goldfish, Common Goldfish Scientific Name - Carassius auratus auratus  Family - Cyprinidae Origin – South and East Asia. Size – Up to 70 cm. First discovered - Linnaeus, 1758 Nutrition - Omnivorous. Will accept flake and pellet foods, also include some vegetable matter and live or frozen foods. Behavior - peaceful Maintenance and care – Requires at least 50 gallon tank size with plenty of swimming room. best kept with other goldfish or large coldwater species due to the fact that it is coldwater fish so do not mix it with tropical fish as it require a less temperature than tropical fish Goldfish are notoriously filthy, producing much waste, frequent water changes and good filtration system is essential. Water Parameters – Temperature: 1C-40C (34F-104F), PH: 6-8, DH: 5-20 Breeding – easy to breed Males are thinner then females and may exhibit breeding spots on their heads and flanks during the spawning season. Gradually increase the temperature to 75 degrees F. Provide soft vegetation or a spawning mop, and excellent water quality. Recommended to remove parents once the eggs are layed, or the eggs will be eaten. A mature pair may produce over 1,000 eggs which hatch after 4-5 days. The fry are easy to feed on small live foods.
