General information – The Rainbow shark or by its scientific name

Epalzeorhynchos frenatus is a very attractive and active fish, it has 2

pairs of sensitive barbells beside the mouth helping him to seek

leftovers and algae. Rainbow shark has a brown/blue/gray body with

a whitish belly, red fins, and a small dark stripe which crosses the

eyes. Juveniles need a lot of vegetation in their diet to promote proper

growth and coloration. The Rainbow Shark swims mostly in the lower

level of the aquarium, Rainbow Sharks come in two different varieties:

The Epalzeorhynchos frenatus which is gray with orange fins and the

Epalzeorhynchos munense or by its common name Albino Rainbow

Shark, which is white with orange fins 

Common Name - Red Fin Shark, Ruby Shark, Red Shark,

Scientific Name - Epalzeorhynchos frenatus 

Family - Cyprinidae 

Origin - Thailand, Indonesia 

Size – 15cm (6 inches) 

First discovered - Fowler, 1934

Nutrition – Although the rainbow fish spends it's time eating algae of plants, rocks and aquarium

decoration it will need it's died to be balanced. It will accept flakes, pellets and frozen food.

Also recommended to feed the rainbow fish with Fresh spinach, zucchini, lettuce and oriental

algae such as nori 

Behavior – Semi aggressive in general but highly aggressive towards other Rainbow Sharks 

Maintenance and care – The Rainbow shark requires 55 gallon (208 liters) tank size. The aquarium

should have rocks, caves and plats for the shark to hide in and use as a shelter. This fish is not

recommended for beginning aquarists because of their temperament 

Water Parameters – Temperature: 24C-27C (75F-80F), PH: 6.5- 8  

Breeding – very rare, Rainbow's have been bred in captivity, but the success rate is low due to their lack

of intolerance for each other.
