General information – Platy fish, small, tropical fish of the live-bearers

family, it is popular as aquarium fish all over the world. It is also one of

the most recommendable fish for any beginner. All platy in the hobby

are always commercially bred and not from the wild. . Some people call

these fish platies because they were originally named Platipoecilius

and not Xiphophorus as they known today. Platy used for genetic and

other research studies. 

Common Name – Platy, Southern platyfish 

Scientific Name - Xiphophorus maculatus 

Family – Livebearers (Poeciliidae family) 

Origin - Central America (Mexico and Belize)

Size – 5.0 - 8.0 cm (2.0 - 3.1 in)  

First discovered - Gunther, 1866 

Nutrition - Platies will accept most foods. They need foods with algae in them. They also constantly

snack on the algae growing on your tank’s surfaces. The platy also love live foods and frozen foods. 

Behavior - peaceful  

Maintenance and care – The Platy can be kept in most community aquariums but should not be kept

with large aggressive fish such as cichlids. It should be kept in schools in well planted tank.  

Water Parameters – Temperature: 20C-25C, PH: 7-8.3, DGH: 12-18  

Breeding – livebearers. This term (livebearers) means that their fry come out swimming and "ready" to

the big World. After mating the fertilized eggs remain in the female abdomen and after wile the female

releasing the fry to open water. Like all livebearers when the female is in pregnant it will develop a dark

triangular shaped gravid spot near her anal vent. At the time the fry comes out recommended to move

them or the parent to other tank or else the parent will eat their own fry.
