General information - The Molly is a tropical fish that prefers a little salt in their water but it will be able to thrive even without any salt in its tank. The Molly comes in many different colors such as orange, black, green, gray and even white. The molly is ideal for beginners, it is hardy fish that can tolerate beginners mistakes. Origin - Central America from Mexico to Columbia Size – up to 15 cm (6 inches) First discovered - Lesueur, 1821 Nutrition – omnivore, will accept commercial food such as flakes, pellets live or frozen food. Also feed on algae Behavior -Peaceful Maintenance and care – Requires 15 gallon minimum tank size. best kept alone or with other Livebearers in a large well planted aquariums and with open swimming areas. although it is hardy fish water changes and well filtered water are essential. Water Parameters – temperature- 70F – 82F (21C- 28C), PH: 7.5 - 8.5, DH: 10-25. Breeding – livebearers. This term (livebearers) means that their fry come out swimming and "ready" to the big World. The gestation period for this fish is usually 28 days but sometimes can take some more time. Like all livebearers when the female is in pregnant it will develop a dark triangular shaped gravid spot near her anal vent. As the pregnancy progresses this dark triangular shaped gravid spot will get larger and darker. At the time the fry comes out recommended to move them or the parent to another tank or else the parent will eat their own fry.
