General information – the Melanotaenia nigrans inhabits rainforest streams, Lagoons and small streams. This fish is ideal to keep in community tank due to its size and character. Common Name - Black-Banded Rainbowfish, Australian Redtailed Rainbowfish Scientific Name - Melanotaenia nigrans  Family - Melanotaeniidae Origin - found in north, east and west Australia. Also found in New Guinea. Size - 9.0 - 11.0 cm (3.5 - 4.3 inches) First discovered - Richardson, 1843 Nutrition – Omnivore, in nature the Melanotaenia nigrans feeds on aquatic insects, algae and terrestrial insects fall into water. In home tank they will accept commercial food such as flakes, pellets, live or frozen food. Behavior – Peaceful. Maintenance and care – The Melanotaenia nigrans will appreciate well planted aquarium with roots and branches as hiding places. Best kept in school of 6 and up with other peaceful fish. water changes on a weekly basis and well filtered water are essential. Water Parameters – temperature- 22.0 C - 25.0 C (71.6 F - 77.0 F), PH: 5.5 - 7.0, DGH 4.0 - 13.0 Breeding – spawning eggs mainly in the rainy season, in home tank the Melanotaenia Nigrans lay only a few large eggs in one egg patch, In each egg patch, the female will continue laying eggs for few days, which contains up to 20 eggs. After 5-6 days hatching occurs.
