General information – The Pseudomugil furcatus known to be a very colorful fish.

The Forktail rainbowfish was found in Papua New Guinea in a highly vegitated Ecosystem. 

This fish got its common name Forktail rainbowfish due to its tail shaped like a fork.

Its Green and Yellow colors make it suitable addition to any community tank.

This fish known as Popondetta furcata also, its named after the village that it was

found in Papua New Guinea.

Scientific Name - Pseudomugil furcatus 

Family - Pseudomugilidae 

Origin - Indo Pacific; found mostly in Papua New Guinea  

Size – 4-5CM (1.6-2 inches) 

First discovered - Nichols, 1955.  

Nutrition – omnivore, will accept commercial food such as flakes,                    

small pellets and  frozen food. 

Behavior – peaceful, best kept with other small community fish such as tetras, Livebearers and danios.   

Maintenance and care - easy to keep, this fish will appreciate a well planted aquarium

with a lot of swimming area. The Blue-Eye Rainbow should be  kept in minimum 15 gallon tank

with schools of  6 and up.

water changes on a weekly  basis and well filtered water are essential. 

The pseudomugil furcatus are susceptible to the oodinium disease so quarantine recomended. 

Water Parameters – temperature: 71.6F – 75.2F (22C-24C), PH- 7-8, DGH: 8-18.   

Breeding – easy to breed. This fish lays only a few large eggs in one egg patch.

In each egg patch, the female will continue laying eggs for a few days, which contains up to 10 eggs.     

After 8-10 days hatching occurs.
