General information – This beautiful snail is one of the most popular and south after nerite snail in the hobby. The Zebra Nerite Snail has beautiful golden shell with black zig zag stripes running down. Common Name - Zebra nerite snail, Tiger nerite snail Scientific Name - Neritina Natalensis Family - Neritidae Origin – South Africa and Florida Size - These snails have a maximum size of 2 inches (5cm)) shell and body length. First discovered – Reeve, 1845
Nutrition - The diet of the Zebra nerite snail mainly consists of algae and other vegetable matter, in the aquarium will eat also uneaten fish foods and meaty foods such as dead fish corpses. Needs Calcium additions to its diet. Behavior – Peaceful Maintenance and care – These snails are easy to keep, and can be kept in a small 15 liter snail/invert only tank. As this snail is fast growing, it needs calcium rich water, so it can grow with a healthy shell- the calcium is used as calcium-carbonate to create the shell, lack of calcium will cause the shell to be thinner and more susceptible to breaking and eventually, the snail will die. Water should contain no heavy metals as they are lethal to the snails!!! Water Parameters – Temperature: 22C-26C (72F-76F), PH: 7.8.5 Breeding – The Zebra nerite snail can not breed in freshwater. When well fed they will lay lots of eggs which in most cases do not hatch. The Zebra Nerite Snail requires brackish water in order to breed successfully. Some hobbyists have been successful in breeding nerite snails but the young snail die quite fast.
