The Apogonidae is a large family of mainly marine fish (some found in brackish water), no more than 20 cm long, that have two separate dorsal fins and relatively large eyes and mouth. Most cardinal fish display the unusual habit of buccal incubation. In some species the males are the mouth-brooders. They are found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. A handful of species are kept in the aquarium and are popular as small, peaceful fish. This family contains 24 genera and about 330 species.
