General information - With its beautiful purple and red coloration the Purple Firefish is a beautiful addition to any peaceful reef aquarium. This species is very similar to the standard fire fish goby, differing primarily in coloration. In the wild Purple Firefish found in open bottoms at the base of corals, over sandy areas and coral rubble patches. It is a peaceful fish but may become territorial and fight with other members of its family like the magnifica Firefish. As mentioned above, Purple Firefish has magnificent colors, it has light pink to white body and dark purple rear end, purple and red on the fins no wonder that it is a very sought after marine fish. Common Name – Purple Firefish, Purple Firefish Goby, Flame Firefish, Purple Dartfish, Purple Fire Goby, Decorated Dartfish, Decorated Firefish, decora goby Scientific Name - Nemateleotris decora Family - Gobiidae Origin - Indo-Pacific Ocean Size - Up to 3 inches First discovered - Unknown Nutrition - Carnivore, in the wild the Purple Firefish feeds on zooplankton, especially copepods and crustacean larva. In aquarium it will accept most meaty foods such as krill, mysis, brine shrimp and other small frozen foods. High quality flake food can complete its diet. Behavior - Peaceful Maintenance and care – The Purple Firefish should be kept in at least 20 gallons with plenty of places to hide and swim. It is best kept either singly or as a pair. Keep a lid on your fish tank because the Purple Firefish will try to jump out. This fish displays no aggression toward other fish, corals, or invertebrates so it is great addition to reef tanks.
