General information - There are several species of blennies that consume algae one of them and maybe

the best algae eater is The Salarias fasciatus.

In this species it is very hard to determine differences between male and female.

The Jewelled blenny has been known to nip at corals and clam mantles.

Many fish keepers keep this fish due to its apatite to algae.

Scientific Name - Salarias fasciatus

Family -Blenniidae.                                                                                                                                            

Origin – Indo pacific. 

Size – 4-6 inches (10cm-15cm).  

First discovered – Bloch 1786.   

Nutrition – herbivore.

The Jewelled blenny has teeth that are adapted at scraping algae

from the surface of rocks and the walls of the tank.

Known to eat almost any algae from the tank but it will ignore eating the blue green algae. 

Behavior – peaceful but can be very aggressive to other jewelled blenny and to fish with the same shape.

best to house singly. 

Maintenance and care – 30 gallon minimum with multiple swimming levels and plenty of rock.

Strong aeration and well filtered water are essential. 

Water Parameters – PH: 8.1-8.4, temperature: 70F-82F (21C-28C), Salinity: 1.020-1.025, DKH: 8-12.  

Breeding – egg layer, very hard to breed. They lay eggs that are sticky and attached to the substrate.
