General information – The Blue-green Chromis is recommended to

beginners due to its durableness. Although many new reef keepers

keep the green chromis as their first fish we can see that this species

is kept also by experienced saltwater aquarists in groups of 6 and more

in a well established reef tanks. It is also number one fish selected as a

tank-cycling fish all over the world. In nature the Blue-green Chromis

inhabits reefs and lagoons. Usually this species can be found in large

schools. The Green Chromis belongs to the damselfish group, unlike

damselfish the chromis is calm and peaceful species. Blue-green

Chromis has pale green to light blue colors.

Scientific Name - Chromis viridis 

Family - Pomacentridae 

Origin - Indo-Pacific, Red Sea Size – Up to 8 cm (3.1 in) 

First discovered - Cuvier, 1830 

Nutrition - Omnivore, in the wild the Blue-green Chromis feeds on phytoplankton. Its diet should be

varied and consist meaty flakes, herbivore flakes, and frozen foods. It is best to feed small amounts

several times a day.  

Behavior – Peaceful  

Maintenance and care – It is highly recommended to keep 6 or more Blue-green Chromis  in a

minimum of 30 gallons (115 liters) fish tank. The chromis does well with any non predatory fish. The

Blue Green Chromis is considered reef safe. 

Water Parameters - Temperature: 72F - 80F (22C - 27C), pH : 8.1 - 8.4, dKH: 8 – 12,

Specific Gravity : 1.020 - 1.025 

Breeding – Can be breed in captivity. In order to breed green-blue chromis it is highly recommended

to keep them in a well established breeding tank in group of 6 with good water quality. Conditioning is

made by feeding the fish live or frozen foods about two to three times a day. Male will turn slightly yellow,

will build a nest in the sand and court various females
