General information - The Odonus Niger is a beautiful dark blue fish, ranging up to 50 cm in length. The Blue Triggerfish or the Odonus Niger has an upturned mouth with a protruding chin. This fish pick on corals and tank invertebrates. Common Name - Redtoothed triggerfish Scientific Name - Odonus Niger Family – Balistidae, order- Tetraodontiformes Origin - Western Central and Eastern Central Pacific, Western and Eastern Indian Ocean. Size – up to 50cm (20 inches) First discovered - Ruppell 1836 Nutrition – carnivore, in the wild the Redtoothed triggerfish feeds on eggs, tunicates, crabs, worms, sponges, mollusks, shrimp and clams. In captivity will accept commercial food such as flakes and pellet food.Live or frozen food is essential. Behavior – peaceful, the Blue Triggerfish or the Odonus Niger can be quit calm especially if it has plenty of room to swim and it well fed, otherwise it can became aggressive. Maintenance and care - A 75 gallon and up provides a good environment for the Redtoothed triggerfish. Water changes on a monthly basis and suitable protein skimmer are essential. Water Parameters – temperature: 72F- 82F, PH: 8.1- 8.4, specific gravity: 1.022- 1.025. Breeding - – Not currently bred in captivity
